Contemporary Films has a vast library covering all aspects of the arts, including art and artists, cinema, dance and ballet.

Eadweard Muybrdige documents the beginning of cinema. An Acre of Seats in a Garden of Dreams tells the story and includes footage of many of the oldest cinemas in the UK, some of which have been converted, others are still working cinemas. We also have films of the famous Hollywood 10 including footage of Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart and the others who, caught up in the McCarthy anti-communist scare, sacrificed their film careers for their political principles. We have footage of directors at work including Lindsay Anderson, Eisenstein, Andrzej Wajda and Werner Herzog. Un Chien Andalou made in collaboration with the artist Dali and filmmaker Luis Bunuel is one of our most popular and active films and is part of our library of artists including rare footage of Gustav Metzger, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Picasso and many others.

Writers and poets are represented by Norman Mailer and Harold Pinter’s recitation in Poets Against the Bomb. Footage of dance and ballet can be found under the category of stock footage.
